It has many names: Vigna mungo, the scientific name, urd bean, urad bean, black matte bean, mungo bean, minapa pappu, and mash bean. Black gram is also often referred to as black lentil, but it is not to be confused with the actual black lentil, scientifically named Lens culinaris. This legume originated in South Asia and has been used in Indian culture since ancient times.
